Have you ever ended up where you did not want to be?
Michael Hyatt, in his Life Plan Podcast, told a story about he and his wife’s wonderful day of snorkeling at a beautiful beach in Hawaii. They spent time underwater, spellbound by the beautiful creatures beneath the surface.
Time went by unnoticed. Then Michael came up for water, glanced at the horizon, and realized they had been swept almost a mile away from their beach in a riptide! The buildings on the horizon looked like toys.
Fortunately, they had a boogie board and frantically paddled back to the beach.
In the same way, if we don’t plan our life, our life will pass by until we find ourselves in currents and places we don’t want to be.

Imagine Your Funeral
Here’s a quote from Michael Gerber’s E-Myth Revisited:
I’d like you to imagine that you are about to attend one of the most important occasions of your life.
It will be held in a room sufficiently large to seat all of your friends, your family, your business associates—anyone and everyone to whom you are important and who is important to you.
Can you see it?
The walls are draped with deep golden tapestries. The lighting is subdued, soft, casting a warm glow on the faces of your expectant guests. The chairs are handsomely upholstered in a golden fabric that matches the tapestries. The golden carpeting is deeply piled.
At the front of the room is a dais, and on the dais a large, beautifully decorated table with candles burning at either end.
On the table, in the center, is the object of everyone’s attention. A large, shining, ornate box. And in the box is … you! Stiff as the proverbial board.
Do you see yourself lying in the box, not a dry eye in the room?
Listen to the most important people in your life.
Make a list of the most important people in your life. These may include your parents; your children; your spouse; your close friends; and your customers.
What do you want each of these groups of people to say about you?
What accomplishments do you want them to talk about?
What legacy have you left?
One thing in life is certain. We will all die. So how do we want to live?
Writing the answers to the above questions from each person’s point of view will help you understand what you most want to carry out in your life.
Where Do You Want To Be?
In article and e-book about Your Life Plan, Michael Hyatt talks about different areas in our lives being like bank accounts.
Some have more deposits and reserves than others.
Here are my life accounts:
3. Vicki (my wife)
Take some time to think about your funeral exercise. Write a paragraph or two for each life account: positive, in the present tense, visualizing your ideal outcomes as you want them to be when they are showing an abundant and positive “net worth”.
For example, for my wife:
Vicki knows without any doubt that I love her with my whole heart. I study her interests and passions, and I help her carry out her dreams. I make time for date nights, special weekends, and special gifts. We build a deep and lasting relationship together.
Where Are You Now?
In this goal setting activity, you need to be bluntly honest with yourself.
You may be doing well, but you may also be falling short.
We can’t change what we don’t see, so write it down in black and white.
For example, with regard to my children, I might write:
- I have a pretty good relationship with my son
- I don’t see my daughter that much, because she has so many activities
- I’m working too many Saturdays
- I have a habit of annoying my children by singing too much when they’ve just woken up, or when they’re tired (it’s true 😉
- I haven’t had a special weekend or special trips with either one of them for a while
How Are You Going to Get There?
Once you’ve outlined the activities to fill up your life accounts, you’ll want to take action!
Writing down commitments without taking action is like standing on the road and planning to get to a destination without starting to walk!
Plug those goal activities/commitments into a goal habit system that will help you take goal attaining actions daily, every other day, or weekly.
