Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for.3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. -Hebrews 11:1-3, The Bible
Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become. Your Vision is the promise of what you shall one day be. Your Ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil. -James Allen
You Can Create A Better Future
The light bulb. The automobile. The end of slavery. The end of apartheid.
Democracy. Equal rights.
They all started with vision.
What if Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Nelson Mandela, the Founding Fathers of the United States, and countless visionary leaders throughout history had failed to harness the power of vision?
The world would have lost countless contributions.
Powerful endeavors and better futures begin with vision.
Gordon D’Angelo, author of Vision: Your Pathway to Victory, is Chairman and CEO of NEXT Financial Holdings, Inc., has consulted for two of the top fifteen franchises in the world, and has founded numerous successful companies. He’s designed a simple, powerful vision template to help you author your personal vision statement.
Components of the Visionary Template
Vision = the definable intention from which preparation is formed. -Gordon D’Angelo
Before You Begin: Your Wish List
Believe that all things are possible. Like a child, open to the wonder and possibilities of life, think about the results you want in your personal and business life, and write them down.
Here’s an example from the book:
- Work less
- Spend more time with my family
- Make more money
- Increase my business profit and equity
- More one on one time with clients
- Better quality clients
- Help others
Anatomy of a Template
Choose a date between 3-5 years. This time frame helps you see results quickly.
This image is an escalating arrow. It points upward, and is a positive symbol of exponential growth from year to year.
Spend 15 minutes designing your visionary list. List five items of the measurable and tangible place you want to be by your chosen timeline.
Here’s an example of a business professional vision:
The timeline date: December 31, 2015
The visionary list:
- Higher gross income
- Higher net profit
- More affluent clients
- Two assistants
- Work fewer hours
Go back to your list and make it more clear and specific.
After your write your items down, go back to it over the next week or two. Like a sculptor polishing the block of marble, you want to hone and define those items.
For example, the author for the list above, created more definable terms as follows:
- Gross income of $500,000
- Net profit of $380,000
- 60 Clients with a net worth of $1,000,000
- 2 Full-time licensed assistants
- 30 Hour Work Week
Now that we’ve finished the outline, here’s the template! This page has the wishlist, template anatomy, and visionary template.
By 1980, I will be the best known oriental movie star in the United States and will have secured $10 million dollars… And in return, I will give the very best acting I could possibly give every single time I am in front of the camera and I will live in peace and harmony.
Bruce Lee created a better future. You can, too!
Remember that your vision needs to be definable, measurable (numeric), tangible, and should describe the results you want (versus specific activities).
After you write your vision, look at it. Are you excited and passionate? If not, what’s missing?
Gordon D’Angelo makes a powerful point. Using the language of Scripture, he talks about having the faith of a child. A child doesn’t doubt and wonder. A child believes.
Any worthy vision will stretch your faith and kick up self-doubt. Adopt self-talk to squash your limiting beliefs.
Jody Williams talks about a realistic vision for world peace. Be inspired 🙂
This Harvard Business Review blog article talks about personal leadership vision examples.
