You Need An Online Career Portfolio
“Success on any major scale requires you to accept responsibility . . . . In the final analysis, the one quality that all successful people have is the ability to take on responsibility.”
— Michael Korda
Editor-in-Chief, Simon & Schuster“The price of greatness is responsibility.”
— Winston Churchill
You need an online career portfolio.
You may be an employee.
You may be self-employed.
Or you may be a business owner.
You all have something in common. Yourself!
There is only one you! You have unique experiences, personality traits, strengths, and skill sets.
And you may be what the next company or customer may be desperately looking for.
Managing your career or business in this ever-changing economy is a bit like going for a roller coaster ride!
You’ve got to take responsibility for your own career success!
One of the key success factors for career management is an online career portfolio.
I’m currently designing a new free eBook for readers and subscribers to this blog, called How To Design Your Online Career Portfolio.
Here’s a sample from the book to show you how important your own online career portfolio will be to your continued employee or business success.
Your Online Career Portfolio Will Showcase Your Unique Selling Proposition
An online career portfolio is your way of showcasing your strengths, talents, areas of competence, and accomplishments.
It will give you a distinct advantage over others who have not taken the time to organize all this into an attractive sales presentation. Your online career portfolio will serve as your portable resume as you grow and change.
Before considering this topic, I did not have anything together in one place. My accomplishments, reviews, awards, and documents were scattered in different places.
Writing this eBook has changed all that!
Your Online Career Portfolio Will Breed Success Consciousness
By keeping your online career portfolio polished and organized, you’ll be thinking ahead about what further goals, accomplishments, and areas of competence you want to add to your portfolio.
You’ll have a proactive mindset and not a reactive one.
And it’s well documented that those who take action on what they can control feel more confident as they face the tides of shifting change.
Sign up for my newsletter and my eBook is a free gift to you.
I’d love to hear from you in the comments below:
Do you have your own online career portfolio?
How did you think through your own unique selling proposition?
What are some unique skill sets you offer to potential employers and/or customers?
We can all learn from each other!
Certainly it will increase your visibility and presence. Creating your portfolio website allows you to share and showcase your work easily with the employers you’d like to work for.

Having our own business portfolio is a great idea. Since we are unique and have traits that all don’t posses, it makes us look good.

Very good point, Jacob. I’ve put together the eBook, but now I need to put together my own specific portfolio 🙂 I learned some great ideas: the two most important being a) what is my unique value proposition and b) what are the skills and accomplishments that set me apart from the pack.
Hi Steve,
We always have to keep a history of our career and know not only our strengths but our weaknesses too. We should always be able to think what we would ask if we were the employer or the client and be able to answer clearly every question without pretending to be something we are not. I will be waiting for your new ebook, thanks for sharing…

Kostas, great point about knowing our weaknesses as well. It’s not very popular these days to talk about weaknesses, but knowing them and working on them through a personal development plan is critically important to our success. Thank you for pointing this out.
Hi Steve,
I think it is an excellent idea. As many of us find it hard to describe our skills on line. Also many people find it hard to understand the online sales process so I think this is fantastic. Especially now when many people are needing to adapt due to the changes in the world economy by the day. Take care Rosemary

You shared some really good points here Steve. A career portfolio (or in the old days, resume) for today’s professional is certainly a great way to keep in touch with what you have done, accomplished and what you strive to do more. Anything that can provide you a way to document your strengths, whether personally or in business, is a wonderful guideline to keep you on course. So having an online portfolio is a great idea.

Great message – that instantly made me cringe! So many changes in recent months and I really (really!) need to take the time to update all of my profiles floating around the www. Good luck with your book! I just finished the PDF version of mine and after recouperating tommorrow will start working on converting it to upload to Amazon. Knowing me I’ll keep tweeking it right down until the time I upload it there, but that’s ok – it’s all GOOD stuff! Thanks Steve …

Thanks, Jay. As Dr. Erica points out below, it’s important that we take the time to think through our unique value proposition, our ideal customer, and our strengths and accomplishments before we put these online portfolios together. That way, we have a plan in place, versus shooting at a target with buckshot.
This is a great idea — much of the business world communicates online today so this will save a lot of time. It’s also required if you’re looking for working in any online field such as writing, web design or Internet program.

Stephen,
I completed a 1 year marketing plan which turned out to be over 60 pages. It was a comprehensive overview of who I am, what I offer, what is unique about my credentials, techniques and coaching style. It included how I plan to implement all aspects of my business, article sites, blogs, radio sites, videos, memberships sites and levels of membership and products. It was also organized by month, by season, by holidays, and so much more. At this point I have only implemented a small portion of what I had carefully committed onto paper. It is a process of my becoming what I know I already am.
Warmly,
Dr. Erica

Dr. Erica, I’m curious: what prompted you to put that marketing plan together, and what were some of the resources you used to put it together, if you don’t mind sharing? I’ve always been very impressed with the work and detail you put into that document. It probably explains a lot of your results to date! (Of course, you were behind it all as well 🙂
I love the idea of an online career portfolio; defining who we are. It is a great innovative concept. Thanks so much for sharing.
